Biography

In 5th grade I fell in love with a comic book in my down time in math class. The teacher had a book shelf we could select things from and I read this comic every time. It was the comic adaptation of of Disney's "The Black  Cauldron." Later that year I got the paperback novel from the Scholastic Book orders. (And I never saw the actual animation until I was in university.)

I couldn't finish it. It scared me too much. And it was nothing like the comic. The Horned King had already been defeated in "The Book of Three," which I didn't even know was a thing at the time. A few years later I eventually finished the book. And loved it. So I looked up the other books in the series.

The series is known as "The Chronicles of Prydain," inspired by Welsh mythology. Written by Lloyd Alexander in the 1960's. It is, by far, my all time favorite book series and contains many of my favorite characters of all time. The heart of the books and the way they are written still move me to this day.

While I'm not usually a champion of the bad guys, having bad guys who are hard for the hero to measure up to is potent story telling. That said, I was always terrified and impressed by this character being in essentially a kids story.

"What you do not know," Dallben said, "is this: it has reached my ears that a new and mighty war lord has risen, as powerful as Gwydion; some say more powerful. But he is a man of evil for whom death is a black joy. He sports with death as you might sport with a dog." - Dallben, The Book of Three, by Lloyd Alexander
The horned king is described as wearing an antlered mask, that no one knows his name or has seen his face. He wears a crimson cloak "from his naked shoulders," and his arms stained crimson. He rides a foam-spattered animal, and is said to be massive.

I'll save the rest for you readers who want to check the story out yourself. When I saw this head offered from Anthony Velez of Noble Bear Customs, I saw the best interpretation I could have hoped for of this character. (Though his mask is said to be a human skull with horns of a stag.)
